Slideshare is an easy to use web-based sharing of presentations for your teaching/learning experiences. Often we create PowerPoint slideshows and wondered if we were reinventing the wheel over and over. Probably so, but now, educators can share their slides through Slideshare. It is a free Internet based service and a way to archive presentations. Slideshare was ranked as #20 in the Top Tools for Educators in 2008, and has moved up to #11 this year (25 Tools, 2009).

In slideshare documents can be uploaded and shared. Slideshare accepts PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, Adobe PDF Portfolios and Open Office files. The slideshare concept is similar to the YouTube sharing and collaboration features. Once they are uploaded, they become public. These slides can then be embedded in a blog, shared, or used straight from the slideshare.net website. This alone can be helpful to know you have a backup in case you needed to present at a conference and have forgotten your thumb drive or had trouble opening a file. The slideshare website would be a life-saving backup plan or save a potentially embarrassing moment.

Slideshows can be tagged which allows the user to view by category. Categories listed on the slideshare website include Finance, Business, Education, Tech, Health, Photos, Templates, Automotive, Design, Career, Gadgets, and Entertainment. Slideshow presentations can by sorted by type, such as presentations, documents, slidecasts, and VideoSlides.

Educational uses of slideshare presentations are numerous. Not only can slideshows save production time, but also they can be viewed and used for assigned student responses, which can be done by adding comments. Slideshows can be used for collaboration, discussions, as a supplemental resource for the unit being taught or reviewed. Slideshows can be emailed to students if they missed a class and/or used as a study guide (Slideshare Rules!, 2009).
